The Sunday of the Passion:
Palm Sunday
The Liturgy of the Palms
When circumstances permit, the congregation may gather at a place
apart from the church, so that all may go into the church in
procession. The branches of palm or of other trees or shrubs to be
carried in the procession may be distributed to the people before the
service, or after the prayer of blessing.
The following anthem is said, the people standing
Celebrant: Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord.
People: Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.
Celebrant: Let us pray.
Assist us mercifully with your help, O Lord God of our salvation, that
we may enter with joy upon the contemplation of those mighty acts,
whereby you have given us life and immortality; through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.
Palm Gospel Mark 11:1-11
Lector: A Reading from St. Mark
And when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Beth'phage and Bethany, at
the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, and said to them,
"Go into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it you
will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat; untie it and
bring it. If any one says to you, `Why are you doing this?' say, `The
Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.'" And they
went away, and found a colt tied at the door out in the open street;
and they untied it. And those who stood there said to them, "What are
you doing, untying the colt?" And they told them what Jesus had said;
and they let them go. And they brought the colt to Jesus, and threw
their garments on it; and he sat upon it. And many spread their
garments on the road, and others spread leafy branches which they had
cut from the fields. And those who went before and those who followed
cried out, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is coming! Hosanna in
the highest!" And he entered Jerusalem, and went into the temple.
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Celebrant: It is right to praise you, Almighty God, for the acts of
love by which you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ our
Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph,
and was proclaimed as King of kings by those who spread their garments
and branches of palm along his way. Let these branches be for us signs
of his victory, and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever
hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal
life; who lives and reigns in glory with you and the Holy Spirit, now
and for ever. Amen.
The following may then be said
Celebrant: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
People: Hosanna in the highest.
The Procession
Celebrant: Let us go forth in peace.
People: In the name of Christ. Amen.
Hymn All glory, laud, and honor Hymn 154
Celebrant: Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but
first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was
crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross,
may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Holy Eucharist Rite Two
The Word of God
Celebrant: Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins.
People: His mercy endures forever.
Celebrant: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires
known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our
hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly
love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our
Lord. Amen.
Trisagion S-100
Holy God,
Holy and Mighty,
Holy Immortal One,
Have mercy upon us. (3X)
The Collect of the Day
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Let us pray.
Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the
human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him
our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example
of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of
his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Old Testament Reading (sit) Isaiah 52:13 - 53:12
Lector: A Reading from Isaiah
Behold, my servant shall prosper, he shall be exalted and lifted up,
and shall be very high. As many were astonished at him -- his
appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond
that of the sons of men -- so shall he startle many nations; kings
shall shut their mouths because of him; for that which has not been
told them they shall see, and that which they have not heard they
shall understand. Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has
the arm of the LORD been revealed? For he grew up before him like a
young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or
comeliness that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should
desire him. He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and
acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he
was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God,
and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was
bruised for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that made us
whole, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone
astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid
on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so he opened not
his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for
his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of
the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? And they made
his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although
he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it
was the will of the LORD to bruise him; he has put him to grief; when
he makes himself an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, he
shall prolong his days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in his
hand; he shall see the fruit of the travail of his soul and be
satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make
many to be accounted righteous; and he shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will divide him a portion with the great, and he shall
divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out his soul to
death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of
many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Lector: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
Psalm 22:1-11 In Unison
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? *
and are so far from my cry and from the words of my distress?
2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but you do not answer; *
by night as well, but I find no rest.
3 Yet you are the Holy One, *
enthroned upon the praises of Israel.
4 Our forefathers put their trust in you; *
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5 They cried out to you and were delivered; *
they trusted in you and were not put to shame.
6 But as for me, I am a worm and no man, *
scorned by all and despised by the people.
7 All who see me laugh me to scorn; *
they curl their lips and wag their heads, saying,
8 “He trusted in the Lord; let him deliver him; *
let him rescue him, if he delights in him.”
9 Yet you are he who took me out of the womb, *
and kept me safe upon my mother’s breast.
10 I have been entrusted to you ever since I was born; *
you were my God when I was still in my mother’s womb.
11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near, *
and there is none to help.
The New Testament Reading Philippians 2:5-11
Lector: A Reading from Philippians
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who,
though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a
thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a
servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human
form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on
a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the
name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee
should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every
tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the
Father.
Lector: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
The Passion of Our Lord Insert
The Sermon (sit)
The Nicene Creed (stand)
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and
earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally
begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from
true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through
him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down
from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from
the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under
Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he
rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in
glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no
end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he
is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge
one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection
of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Prayers of the People (kneel)
Lector: Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church;
People: That we all may be one.
Lector: Grant that every member of the Church may truly and
humbly serve you;
People: That your Name may be glorified by all people.
Lector: We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons;
People: That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and
Sacraments.
Lector: We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations
of the world;
People: That there may be justice and peace on the earth.
Lector: Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;
People: That our works may find favor in your sight.
Lector: Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or
trouble;
People: That they may be delivered from their distress.
Lector: Give to the departed eternal rest;
People: Let light perpetual shine upon them.
Lector: We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;
People: May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.
Lector: Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.
Celebrant: Heavenly Father, you have promised to hear what we ask in
the Name of your Son: Accept and fulfill our petitions, we pray, not
as we ask in our ignorance, nor as we deserve in our sinfulness, but
as you know and love us in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Confession & Absolution
Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Minister and People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned
against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by
what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and
we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on
us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your
ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
Absolution
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our
Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of
the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
The Peace (stand)
All stand. The Celebrant says to the people
Celebrant: The peace of the Lord
People: And also with you.

THE HOLY COMMUNION
Eucharist Prayer B
The Great Thanksgiving (stand)
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
The Celebrant proceeds It is right, and a good and joyful thing,
always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator
of heaven and earth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. For our sins he
was lifted high upon the cross, that he might draw the whole world to
himself; and, by his suffering and death, he became the source of
eternal salvation for all who put their trust in him. Therefore we
praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all
the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the
glory of your Name:
Sanctus S– 129
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
The people kneel.
Celebrant continues
Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for
yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil
and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and
eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us,
to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.
He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in
obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus
Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it,
and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body,
which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he
gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood
of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the
forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the
remembrance of me.”
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Celebrant and People:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this
sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death,
resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and
Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in
him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy
Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the
last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal
kingdom
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him,
and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is
yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
The Lord’s Prayer
People and Celebrant :
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for
ever and ever. Amen.

eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have
given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ
our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory,
