Paint Chip Lab
Theory and Information:
Mendeleev’s original periodic table arranged elements according to
observed properties. You will go through the same process as you
attempt to arrange paint color “chips” in a logical order. You will be
given an envelope containing paint chips in a variety of colors and
intensities.
The base color of a paint chip represents its chemical properties. You
are to arrange the chips in order of the light spectrum (rainbow) from
left to right. The shade of the color represents the weight of the
chips. You are to arrange the chips top to bottom from lightest to
darkest. By the way, each group is missing 4 paint chips and must
leave open spots in your arrangement for them.
About 10 minutes into the activity, the teacher will give you other
clues as to how to arrange the paint chips.
Write up for lab:
1.
heading (your name only, no partner names are needed)
2.
title
3.
objective – remember to answer what and why
4.
Discussion
a.
Explain in paragraph form how your paint chips were organized
and how you knew where to leave the open spots at.
b.
Write a separate sentence on how correct your group was in
leaving the open spots
5.
Conclusion – You may repeat some of the discussion above, but the
main focus should be how this lab was similar to how Mendeleev
organized the first periodic table.
