Controllers and indicators help raise drinking water quality in
Egyptian water treatment project
Over 250 process controllers and indicators from ABB are helping to
maintain a clean supply of water to over three million people in two
of Egypt’s biggest water sector projects. Supplied as part of an
extension of the country’s El Tbeen and El Fostat water treatment
plants, the controller and indication devices are part of an
integrated control system supplied by ABB’s Power Systems business.
Serving Cairo and Helwan, the water treatment plants are using ABB’s
150 C50 controller units and 100 C150 indicator units to help manage
and control the filters used during the water treatment process. The
devices form part of control panels and filter control desks supplied
as part of the integrated control system.
Both owned and operated by Egypt’s Water Holding Company, the El Tbeen
and El Fostat water treatment plants draw their water from the River
Nile.
Using the C50 controllers and C150 indicators has enabled the plants’
operators to accurately regulate the flow and water levels of their
various processes, including the sand filtration plants. Together, the
devices help monitor the loss of head within the filters and the flow
and level signals within each filter and also within the plant, with
each device providing an alarm in the event of conditions reaching set
limits.
The C50 controllers and C150 indicators at both the El Tbeen and El
Fostat sites are linked to PLCs which manage the water treatment
processes and ensure that water is treated to the correct standards to
make it suitable for distribution.
“The extension of the Tbeen and Fostat water treatment plants is part
of the ongoing efforts that have been made in raising the quantity and
quality of treated water to citizens around the Nile Delta in recent
years,” says Ahmed Adel, ABB’s local business manager for Egypt.
“ABB’s control and indication devices have proved ideal in helping to
maintain a constant supply of water treated to the correct standards
for the people of Cairo and the Helwan area.”
