Role and Grading Framework
Professorial Title: Emeritus, Honorary
& Visiting Professorships
1.
Introduction
This Policy is part of the Role and Grading Framework which is made up
of a number of elements which together encompass all formal policy,
procedure and statement documents, including associated forms,
relating to the role and grading processes in Abertay University.
If you would like this document in a different format (e.g. large
print, braille) or need any assistance to access or understand the
policy/procedure please contact your School/Service designated HR
Partner.
2.
Purpose and Scope
This policy relates to the conferment of the title of Emeritus,
Honorary and Visiting Professor. It does not include designation of
the title of Professor for employees, which is covered by the academic
promotion and recruitment policies, as appropriate. This policy does
not form part of any employee’s contract of employment and it may be
amended at any time.
3.
Professorial Title
The designation of the titles, Emeritus Professor, Visiting Professor
and Honorary Professor of the University are granted by the Principal
& Vice Chancellor and Vice-Principal and Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
The title of Emeritus Professor may be conferred on a Professor of the
University on retirement, and will subsequently be kept for life.
The title of Visiting Professor, in the first instance, will normally
be conferred for a period of three years and then reviewed. Renewals
will normally be on a 3 yearly basis. The title lapses with the
termination of the connection with the University.
The title of Visiting Professor may be awarded to a person who holds a
Professorial title at another institution.
The title of Honorary Professor is reserved for individuals who are
closely linked to one of the University’s academic departments.
Professors who hold an employment contract with the University will be
provided access to Senate papers. Emeritus Professors may also request
access to Senate papers and a decision to grant access will be
provided by the Principal and Vice Chancellor depending on the reason
for the request.
Emeritus and Visiting Professors are not employed by the University.
They may receive expenses for travel and subsistence necessarily
incurred in the course of carrying out functions for the University,
which should be approved by the Head of School through the
University’s normal financial process. They may also be provided
limited access to University facilities, for example Information
Services and may be invited to University Events such as Graduation.
Other internal and/or external colleagues may be asked to provide
advice and opinion on the merits of those being considered.
