High Risk Activities

The University of Bath Students’ Union has a strong commitment to
equal opportunities and works to ensure that all its activities are
open and available to all its members. This includes students under
the age of 18 years of age, who are legally considered to be minors.
To ensure that the Students’ Union fulfils its’ ‘Duty of Care’ and
provides adequate support for all members the following steps must be
taken before anyone under the age of 18 can participate in high risk
activities.
Parental/Legal Guardian consent is required for students under the age
of 18 who wish to participate in the following high risk activities:
Sport Clubs
Water based
Outdoor
Contact Sport
Airborne
Clubs
Projectile
Clubs
Canoe
Mountaineering
Rugby
Union/League
Sky Diving
Clay Pigeon
Shooting
Sailing
Horse Riding
American
Football
Gliding
Archery
Surfing
Motorsports
Cheerleading
(stunts)
Societies
Backstage
The below activities/support roles are not permitted for under 18
students.
Any SU group activity that involves overnight stays.
Oversea trips.
Nightline Support.
Committee roles
Mentor roles
Taking a lead role, for eg on an event/trip/project
From time to time there will be new activities and events introduced
during the year. If you have any doubt at all contact the relevant
area manager.
Students under the age of 18 are advised to read the Under 18 Policy.
Parent/Legal Guardians are also advised to read the policy before
signing the consent form.
Important Information:
Under 18s and parents/legal guardians have a responsibility to inform
the Students’ Union of any medical condition or previous injury which
might inhibit your participation in, or put at risk any other member
of, the student activity. This information will be passed onto the
relevant area manager who may inform relevant staff and student
committee members and leaders. These details will not be divulged to
any other individual or organisation without your consent.
As a member of a student group you may participate in activities which
involve an element of risk, in an environment where professional
medical and rescue services may not always be immediately available.
Although the Students’ Union will take all necessary steps to ensure
that health and safety requirements are always met, it is your
responsibility to ensure that you fully understand the exact nature of
each activity you undertake, the risk involved, the skill levels
required and the equipment needed for your participation. You should
never participate in any activity if you are unsure of any of the
above aspects
