Sport Ed Game Routine
1.
Students enter the gym and sit on their assigned team spots.
2.
Announce which teams are playing, where they are playing, which
teams are officiating, and where they are officiating.
3.
Playing Teams:
*
Playing coaches set their players up on the assigned courts.
*
Playing trainers lead warm-up exercises for their teams.
*
Playing teams practice/warm-up until the referee is ready to
begin.
4.
Officiating Teams: (classes with 6 teams)
*
One team is assigned to officiate a game.
*
Officiating coach assigns a player to be referee for the
assigned game. The referee is in control of the game and makes
all final decisions. The only players that may speak to the
referee are the captains.
*
Officiating coach assigns a player to be the scorekeeper for the
assigned game. The scorekeeper uses the clipboard with the
papers that say “Scoresheet.” The scorekeeper needs to fill out
the top portion of the scoresheet before the game begins.
*
Officiating coach assigns a player to be the fair play monitor.
The fair play monitor uses the clipboard with the papers that
say “Fair Play.” The fair play monitor takes notes on
sportsmanship and teamwork during the game and assigns a fair
play score when the game is over (4, 3, 2, 1).
5.
Officiating Teams: (classes with 5 teams)
*
One team splits the officiating for both games.
*
Officiating coach assigns 2 players to be referees (one per game).
*
Officiating coach assigns 2 players to be the scorekeepers (one
per game).
*
If there are enough players on the officiating team, the
officiating coach assigns 2 players (sometimes just 1) to be the
fair play monitors (one per game).
6.
Play the game. Referees are in charge. Scorekeepers keep score on
the clipboards. Fair play monitors take notes on the clipboards.
7.
At the conclusion of the game:
*
Scorekeepers and fair play monitors complete the paperwork on
their clipboards. Don’t forget to get the appropriate signatures
(officials and captains).
*
Reporters fill out a pink game form in their playbooks. The info
should include the final score, fair play score (if applicable),
and referee signature.
*
Coaches choose a “player of the game” from their own teams. Write
this down on the pink form.
*
Playing coaches evaluate the performance of the referee,
scorekeeper, and fair play monitor (4, 3, 2, 1) assigned to their
game(s). The evaluation form can be found in the green section of
the officiating team’s playbook.
*
Players not responsible for any paperwork may continue to play a
“practice” game. Players on the officiating team(s) may join the
practice game.
8.
At the end of class, have the students gather together. Discuss
the games played and announce the “players of the games.” Collect
all paperwork (including playbooks) and pencils/pens.
