Cars contribute to climate change because their engines burn fuel,
which produces carbon dioxide emissions (otherwise known as CO2). If
we burn less fuel we will produce less CO2 emissions and reduce our
running costs.
Here are a few ideas on how you reduce your CO2 emissions
*
Stay at or within the speed limit to increase driver safety,
reduce CO2 emissions and saves money on your petrol costs - at
70mph you could use up to 9% more fuel than at 60mph and up to 15%
more fuel than at 50mph.*
*
Keep your tyres well inflated - check and adjust your tyre
pressures regularly and also before long journeys. This will also
help to increase the life of your tyres.*
*
Don't over rev your engine - modern car engines are designed to be
efficient from the time you switch them on. Revving up your engine
wastes fuel and will increase the wear on your engine.
*
Use your gears wisely - by changing up a gear earlier you can
reduce your revs and CO2 emissions. If you drive a diesel car try
changing up a gear when the rev counter reaches 2000rpm. For a
petrol car change up at 2500rpm.
*
Less stopping and starting means less CO2 - keep an eye on the
traffic ahead. If a queue forms, slow down early by gently lifting
your foot off the accelerator while keeping your car in gear.
Every time you stop then start again in a traffic queue, your
engine uses more fuel and produces more CO2.
*
If you expect to be at a standstill for more than a few minutes,
switch off your engine - if your engine is idling you are wasting
fuel and adding to your CO2 emissions.
*
Put less clutter in your boot - unload any items you don't really
need for your journey. A lighter load should burn less fuel and
cut your CO2 emissions.
*Safety Note:
*
Speed limits are the legal maximum speeds at which you may drive
your car in ideal circumstances. Drivers should never exceed the
speed limit.
*
Always check your car manual for the correct tyre pressure as over
inflated tyres can be dangerous. Remember that a car with a
heavier load may need different air pressure in the tyres. Refer
to your car manual.
