4. Press Release
23 June 2016
Summer Film School will zero in on the Philippine cinematography and
the American independent cinema and will welcome Julie Taymor and
Martin Hilský
II. Summer Film School press conference has taken place today. And
since this year’s Focus addresses the Philippine cinematography it
could be nowhere else than the Philippine Embassy in Prague.
The programme of the first non-European Focus since 2007 will be
divided into several subsections and will be shaped to provide
manifold facets, genres and historical contexts of the Philippine
cinematography. There will be a unique opportunity to acquaint with
the works of Filipino film director Lino Brocka, whose films appeared
on the Cannes Festival official programme. Various forms of Filipino
heroism will be presented, tracing the portrayal of rich and turbulent
Filipino history. The last two subsections will outline a broad range
of the works of Filipino filmmakers – former and contemporary genre
films (gangster movies, superhero films and horrors) as well as
examples of the current Philippine art house favourite films by Lav
Diaz, Brillante Mendoza or Raya Martin.
The Spectrum section, regularly aimed at the latest tendencies in
contemporary world cinema, will introduce a phenomenon called
mumblecore. The term designates a subgenre of American independent
film, which is characterized by low budget production, no-budget
aesthetics and an extensive use of improvisation. While Andrew
Bujalski himself coined the term “mumblecore”, it was his directorial
debut Funny Ha Ha (2002) that is generally considered to be a
cornerstone of the mumblecore movement. The SFS selection of
mumblecore films will cover their history from year 2002 up until the
present.
Another section of this year’s Spectrum is WTF: Point of View. A story
narrated from the perspective of its main protagonists was
particularly brought to attention by Blair Witch (1999). The WTF
section, which regularly addresses specific filmmaking strategies,
will explore the phenomenon in great detail and prove its
long-standing existence. The following films will be screened:
Hardcore Henry (2015), The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007),
Metamorphosis (1975) by Jan Němec or Chandler’s Lady in the Lake
(1947).
As part of the Special Screenings section, we will pay Tribute to
William Shakespeare. His anniversary will be commemorated throughout
the whole festival’s programme. A selection of films representing
various approaches to film adaptations will be highlighted by several
lectures given by Martin Hilský, our foremost expert on Shakespeare’s
works. He will talk about the author’s attitude towards politics and
will demonstrate how many changes, shifts and variations in film and
television adaptations may be traced at an example of one of
Shakespeare’s plays. A unique approach to Shakespeare’s works will be
offered by another expert Julie Taymor.
2016 SFS Guests
Julie Taymor
American female director who dazzled the world of film with her
biography Frida (2002), equally fascinating Shakespeare adaptations of
Titus (1999), The Tempest (2010), or the stage adaptation of A
Midsummer Night’s Dream (2014). But Taymor’s artistic activities go
far beyond film – this versatile lady is an acknowledged stage
director (as the first lady ever won the Tony Award for Best Direction
of a Musical for The Lion King in 1997), she is a great writer, stage
and costume designer, and she also makes puppets.
Alejandro Eduardo Goic
Alejandro Eduardo Goic is a Chilean actor, theatre director and a
professor of the dramatic arts. In recent years, he has lived through
a renaissance in his television and film career. He has embodied a
number of charismatic roles, among which stand out those of the
Argentinian homosexual painter Jorge Larco in the biographical drama
Bombal and the figure of Alejandro, a man with a dark past from the
era of Pinochet’s dictatorship, in Dog Meat by the director Fernando
Guzzoni, as well as that of Father Ortega in the celebrated film Club
by Pablo Larrain.
Other confirmed guests: Filip Bajon, Petr Jarchovský, Martin Hilský,
Janusz Majewski, Ivan Passer, Emília Vášáryová
The SFS programme provides an opportunity to the fledgling artists who
have recently graduated or still study at a film school in the Czech
or Slovak Republic. Six young artists (Michaela Poláková, Václav
Huleš, Martin Hnát and others) will arrive to present their works.
Student films will also be presented in Student Marathon 2016, which
is a collaborative project of AČFK, RWE and Czech Television.

CinEd – European Cinema Education Programme
New international cinema education programme CinEd strives to allow
young people, at the age from 6 to 19, to access the hidden treasures
of the European cinema. Association of Czech Film Clubs is CinEd’s
main partner for the Czech Republic. It coordinates the programme and
mediates it to all interested parties.
Beginning the school year 2016/17, a shared and open-access CinEd’s
platform on www.cined.eu will offer both contemporary European films
and the crucial films of European cultural heritage. All films
included in the programme are to be used for education screenings.
They will meet all criteria to enhance young students’ film literacy.
All films will be subtitled and dubbed into the partners’ national
languages as well as English. Educational materials are also
available. Apart from the film education, the programme is suitable
for teachers of foreign languages.
A thorough introduction to the CinEd programme will be given in the
SFS Industry Programme. An expert discussion will be hosted by Léna
Rouxel, a general coordinator of CinEd programme, and attended by
international partners from France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Bulgaria
and Romania.
