Making Sedimentary Rocks
AIM: To investigate the process of cementation in the production of
sedimentary rocks.
HYPOTHESIS: As you include more , the rocks will turn out
stronger/weaker.
EQUIPMENT: Students are provided with
*
Polystyrene cups (6)
*
Pop sticks (6)
*
Teaspoons
*
Gravel
*
Sand
*
Plaster of Paris
*
Measuring Cylinder
PROCEDURE:
1.
Measure out a number of teaspoons of gravel, sand, plaster of
Paris and water into a polystyrene cup.
2.
Record the mixture you made in the table below.

3.
Stir the mixture with the pop stick and leave the pop stick in
while you set aside the cup for the mixture to cure.
4.
Repeat for five different combinations of the ingredients.
Student design
1.
Decide on a test that you could make to see how strong your rock
is.
2.
The test must be graduated – you should start with a low strength
version of the test and work your way up to a higher strength
test.
3.
These are the steps for my Test

4.
This is my damage scale so that I can rate the damage done.

Conclusion:
1.
Was your hypothesis supported? State evidence.
2.
List your rocks in order strongest to weakest
3.
What did you learn about cementing of sedimentary rocks?
