CAROTID DUPLEX
A CAROTID DUPLEX ULTRASOUND is a non-invasive diagnostic test used to
look for plaques, blood clots or other flow problems in the carotid
arteries; it can detect narrowing and hardening in the arteries. The
carotid arteries, located in the neck, supply blood to the brain. This
test takes approximately 45 minutes.
Who will be administering the test? A registered vascular technologist
How do I prepare for the test? No preparation needed.
What can I expect the day of the test? The test is done in the
ultrasound laboratory. You are placed on your back and your head will
be supported to prevent movement.
A water soluble gel is placed on your neck. A handheld device called a
transducer is placed on the area. The transducer directs
high-frequency sound waves to the arteries being tested, while the gel
helps transmit the sound. Images and wave forms of the blood flow are
obtained that give information to your doctor about the state of
circulation to the brain. The test is painless.
When will I know the results of the test?

instructed by your doctor.

referring Physician will follow up with you regarding the results.
