Social Media Policy for AAST Board of Directors and Committee Members
This policy applies to all AAST Board members, committee leaders,
committee members, and appointed representatives of the AAST
The AAST supports and encourages the use of social media to enhance
communication, collaboration and dissemination of information. The
primary objective of this policy is to provide guidance and direction
to the AAST leadership related to use of social media, which encompass
various activities that integrate technology, social interaction, and
content creation. Social media tools include many technologies, such
as blogs, wikis, photo and video sharing, podcasts, social networking,
mashups, and virtual worlds.
Guiding Principles:

Board and committee members are individually responsible for all
content published online, including, blogs, wikis, forums,
Twitter, Facebook and any other form of user-generated media.

Since content posted on social media will likely be indexed by
search engines and copied by other sites, it can remain public and
associated with individuals even if the original post is deleted.
*
AAST Board and Committee members must post with care and follow
HIPAA guidelines, copyright laws, fair use and financial
disclosure laws.
*
Confidential or proprietary information related to the AAST or its
associates should not be published. In order to post internal or
private information related to the AAST or its associates,
permission must be granted by the AAST Board of Directors.
Good Practices:

Avoid citing or referencing clients, partners or suppliers without
their prior approval. When a reference is made, where possible, it
should link back to the source.

When communicating online, use professional and respectful
behavior and avoid ethnic slurs, personal insults, foul language,
or any conduct that would not be acceptable in a workplace. Use
care to insure that information posted is a professional
reflection of your opinions and beliefs.

If identifying yourself as a committee or board member of the
AAST, be mindful that any content posted on social media sites
will be visible to co-workers, customers, partners and AAST
members.

Refrain from engaging in heated discussion in forums and posts and
use good judgment when expressing opinion that may be construed as
a potential conflict. Do not post angry comments or attack
individuals engaging in the discussion.

Observe generally accepted online publishing standards. Do not
alter previous posts without indicating that you have done so.
*
Comments posted on an AAST social media site that contain
obscenities, personal insults, ethnic slurs or other disparaging
language will be removed.

When posting comments and identifying yourself as an AAST
committee member, make it clear that this is your opinion and does
not reflect the position of the AAST.

Comment or posts reflecting the contents of Board or committee
meetings, are strictly prohibited and failure to comply may result
in disciplinary action by the AAST Board of Directors.

Board and committee members are prohibited from posting insults or
disparaging remarks related to the AAST, its products, services,
committee members or leadership.
*
Patient information should not be posted on social media as this
is a violation of HIPAA.
*
Refrain from discussing specifics about AAST matters, situations,
names of people or any other information that would allow someone
to identify people, technical details etc. Never discuss
confidential information related to the AAST.
*
Non-compliance of this policy can result in disciplinary action by
the AAST Board of Directors.
