Adobe Acres Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program
Fourth Grade
Welcome back to school! We are pleased and honored to be teaching your
child in two languages again this year.
Our program is a special program, as you know, and it is a program of
enrichment. We work very hard to keep developing it and improving it.
As our program has developed, we have clarified the expectations for
the staff, students and parents involved. This letter is to let you
know what you can expect your child to be learning this year in
his/her second language, and what you can do to help.
In fourth grade, the teacher will expect every child to be
communicating in Spanish every day. A child who cannot find the words
he needs during Spanish time will be expected to ask the teacher or
classmates for help, and attempt to say it in Spanish, not just to say
it in English. Written work during Spanish time should also be in
Spanish. The teacher will not use any English during Spanish time.
By the end of fourth grade, you can expect your child to:
*
Understand what the teacher is saying in Spanish
*
Use Spanish in classroom discussions.
*
Read and understand Spanish at a constantly improving level,
approaching grade level.
*
Write short stories and essays completely in Spanish (with errors)
*
Feel comfortable answering questions or carrying on a conversation
in Spanish (with errors)
You can help at home by:
*
Promoting the attitude that your child can and will learn a second
language.
*
Addressing behaviors which interfere with your child’s full
participation in the program.
*
Maintaining your child’s attendance at 95% or better.
*
Keeping a Spanish-English dictionary at home for your child’s use
and your own use.
*
Encouraging your child to exchange phone numbers with a classmate
who can help with homework in Spanish.
Homework
Students are expected to use all the resources at their disposal
(dictionaries, glossaries, parent letters, homework buddies, homework
hotline, and teacher help) in order to complete their homework in the
assigned language. Directions will not be translated, except for some
math and special projects at the teacher’s discretion. Students are
responsible for making sure they understand the homework.
Programa de inmersión bidireccional de Adobe Acres
Cuarto Grado
