Reporting a Student Emergency or Incident While Abroad
Emergency Procedures While Off-Campus:
1) Account for all participants and move them to a safe location
2) Gather information about the student emergency or incident
3) If necessary, contact appropriate parties at host university abroad
or local authorities (ex: police, emergency services, medical
personnel)
4) Contact UW-Whitewater to report the student emergency or incident
5) In consultation with UW-Whitewater and the local authorities,
determine appropriate course of action and next steps
6) Communicate with the travel study group about the incident; inform
them of any changes in the program itinerary, etc.
7) Stay in regular communication with emergency officials both at
UW-Whitewater and abroad until the emergency or incident is resolved
When Contacting Campus, Please Be Prepared To Provide the Following
Details:
1) Your name and the place / location of the student emergency or
incident
2) Name of the travel study course you are teaching / leading
3) Telephone number (where you can be reached while abroad)
4) Description of the student emergency or incident and the name(s)
and condition of the student(s) involved
5) Type of help or assistance that is needed immediately
6) Other contacts that need to be made on your behalf
