INTRODUCTION
A life in the Royal Navy means adventure, comradeship and experiences
for life. Every day you make a difference, and no two days are the
same.
You could be policing the world's oceans, delivering humanitarian aid
when natural or man-made disasters strike, or you could be deployed in
combat.
No matter what job you do, you'll be a key part in essential
operations around the world.
RNAS Culdrose is the home of carrier aviation, protecting our nation’s
aircraft carriers. RNAS Culdrose is the main operating base for the
Merlin helicopters, as well as the Avenger and Hawk fixed wing
aircraft. Our primary purpose is to provide trained manpower and
maritime aircraft to safely deliver air power from the sea.
Our Vision;
“RNAS Culdrose remains a front-line, operational Air Station
delivering trained aircrew, maintainers, ground-crew and equipment to
enable sustainable capability at Very High Readiness 365 days a year;
to protect the Nation's Carriers, support counter-terrorism and
preserve the Nuclear Deterrent.”
Throughout the year a limited number of work experience placements are
available for the students from the local schools and colleges who
have an actual interest in a potential Service career. Please ensure
that only students with a genuine interest (i.e. those wishing to
pursue a career in the Royal Navy) apply for these places due to the
limited numbers. Thank you for your co-operation.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
=====================
Application forms need to legible and completed by the student. Those
that have not been signed by the school/college will unfortunately be
rejected.
Applications must be received by the Work Experience (WEX) Coordinator
at least 2 months in advance of the intended placement dates.
Once the application form has been received and a placement agreed the
student will be sent a confirmation letter. The student will also
receive a consent form, draft programme, summary of the insurance
policy and departmental health & safety risks involved in the
placement. These forms should be read carefully and all relevant
copies should be signed by the parent/guardian and returned to the
Work Experience Coordinator at RNAS Culdrose.
Please note – Placements cannot be honoured unless these forms are
signed and returned to the Culdrose WEX Coordinator in the relevant
time frames.
It is vital that all requests for work experience placements at
Culdrose (excluding Contractor placements) are processed through the
Work Experience Coordinator to ensure all Health, Safety, Insurance
and Child Protection Issues are adhered to. Schools/colleges must
ensure that students, who may well have been rejected by the Work
Experience Coordinator, do not go on to arrange unofficial placements
through friends/relatives they know at Culdrose. Unofficial placements
could have a detrimental effect on the WEX Scheme which could affect
potential future placements for others. These types of placements
would not have been risk assessed, the students would not be insured,
and Child Protection Issues will not have been considered which could
put students at unnecessary risk.
SELECTION OF STUDENTS FOR PLACEMENTS
====================================
It is initially the responsibility of the school or college to ensure
that candidates for placements are seriously considering a career in
the Royal Navy and can behave on site in a manner fitting a military
establishment.
It is strongly recommended that the student contact their local Royal
Navy/Royal Marines Careers Office for information and advice.
Placements are on a first come first served basis providing all
necessary forms have been provided correctly with all relevant
signatures.
It should be noted that unfortunately there are no opportunities for
students to be taken flying due to insurance purposes and we would
stress that this is not what the scheme is offering.
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation is not available to students attending work experience
placements.
TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
Students must make their own travel arrangements to and from the Air
Station.
No responsibility is accepted for students travelling to and from the
establishment.
LUNCH ARRANGEMENTS
Students will need to bring their own food provisions daily as we
cannot guarantee what facilities are available on each department. We
do have a small shop onsite in an emergency.
SCHOOL STAFF VISITS
Teachers wanting to visit their students whilst on Work Experience
should arrange this well in advance, at least 2 weeks prior to the
visit, by contacting the Work Experience Coordinator. Visitors will be
accompanied by the Work Experience Coordinator or a member of the
Learning and Development Hub.
Although visits are arranged in advance, student programmes are
subject to change due to operational changes at RNAS Culdrose.
EVALUATION OF WORK EXPERIENCE
Students will be asked to complete an evaluation form at the end of
their placement. This provides us with essential feedback on any
improvements that could be made to the programme we offer future
students.
MINISTRY OF DEFENCE PUBLIC LIABILITY STATEMENT
The MOD does not purchase insurance policies but accepts its own risks
and acts as its own insurer. It will deal with any claims for
compensation arising against it on the basis of its legal liability to
make payment, which is to say any claim that arises due to the
negligent actions or omissions of the MOD, its personnel, servants or
agents. The MOD’s cover is without financial limit. Any such claim
should be forwarded to:
Ministry of Defence
Directorate of Judicial Engagement Policy
Common Law Claims & Policy
Public Liability Team
Level 1, Zone I
MOD Main Building
Whitehall London SW1A 2HB
Furthermore, the MOD does not purchase Public Liability insurance,
preferring instead to act as its own insurer. Consequently, our cover
is without financial limit and that the Department will deal with any
claims which result from the student’s negligence whilst they are in
our care.
The MOD deals with claims on the basis of its Legal Liability to do so
in common law, which is to say that we will pay compensation where it
can be shown that the MOD, its servants or agents have acted
negligently in the course of their official duty and caused another
party to suffer injury or loss. Therefore, the students concerned are
strongly advised to consider taking out Personal Accident Insurance
(PAI) to provide themselves with some form of cover should they be
injured as a result of a pure accident or an ‘Act of God’.
POTENTIAL OFFICERS ACQUAINT COURSES
RNAS Culdrose provides short residential acquaint courses for
candidates interested in learning about the Fleet Air Arm with a view
to joining the Royal Navy as officers. The courses give candidates a
detailed insight into the workings of an air station, the training of
aircrew officers, and an overview of the role of the Fleet Air Arm
worldwide. There may be some limited opportunity for flying.
Bids to attend these courses are co-ordinated by regional offices of
Captain Naval Recruiting, either directly or in conjunction with
Schools Careers Officers.
