Call for Participants:
Survey on space for civil society in the USA, Ethiopia and Kazakhstan
The space for civil society and civic activities appears to be
shrinking in many countries around the world, particularly in the
context of the ‘global war on terror’. However, there is little
ongoing tracking of this situation, which is necessary in order to
analyse the ongoing status of civil society space worldwide and to be
able to prioritise advocacy efforts.
CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation is developing a
Civic Space Barometer to monitor the perceived space for civil society
around the world. The Barometer compliments other ongoing projects,
including the Early Warning System on Enabling Environments for Civil
Society which is being developed along with the International Center
for Not-for-Profit Law. ”Designed primarily as an advocacy tool rather
than a research initiative, the Barometer aims to assist in
identifying trends in the expansion or shrinkage of civic space. It
will focus on the space for civil society to function freely / levels
of threat experienced by civil society, as perceived by a select group
of experts in each country. The perception of civic space in countries
will be assessed on a periodic basis, likely to be every six months.
Over the coming months, CIVICUS will initially pilot the Barometer in
three countries to test the methodology – the USA, Kazakhstan and
Ethiopia.
Currently, CIVICUS is searching for individuals from various types of
organisations (as listed below) in the USA, Kazakhstan and Ethiopia to
participate in a survey on the space for civil society in their
countries. Applicants should have an understanding of civil society in
their countries, and be willing to complete approximately four simple
surveys over the next two years.
CIVICUS is receiving applications from individuals in the USA,
Kazakhstan and Ethiopia involved in the following types of
organisations/institutions/groups:
*

rights, development, humanitarian, service-delivery, cultural and
recreational, and policy-oriented groups as well as umbrella

*
