FAITH MAKES US CLEAN
Matthew 15:1-28
Key verse: 15:28
“Then Jesus answered, ‘Woman, you have great faith! Your request is
granted.’ And her daughter was healed from that very hour.”
1.
Read vs. 1-2. Who came to Jesus, and from where? What was their
criticism of Jesus’ disciples? Why did they consider this a
serious matter? (See for example Lev. 10:9-11; 11:47; Nu.
19:17-21)
2.
Read vs. 3-6. What was Jesus’ reply? How had the Pharisees
nullified the command of God? Why did they do it? Why must we
always respect God’s commands above our traditions?
3.
Read vs. 7-9. What does it mean to honor God with one’s lips only?
What kind of worship of God is in vain? What is the attitude
toward the word of God that Isaiah and Jesus condemn?
4.
Read vs. 10-14. What did Jesus want the crowd to understand
through his parable? Why were his disciples concerned about Jesus’
teaching? How did Jesus counsel them? What can we learn from
Jesus’ attitude toward the Pharisees?
5.
Read vs. 15-20. Why were the disciples so dull? According to
Jesus, what makes a man unclean? What important distinction does
Jesus draw here between good physical hygiene and good spiritual
discipline?
6.
Read vs. 21-22. Where did Jesus and his disciples go, and who came
to him there? What kind of woman was she in the eyes of the Jews?
What was her sorrow and her request?
7.
Read vs. 23-27. What was Jesus’ initial reaction to the woman? How
about the disciples? What was the obstacle the woman needed to
overcome? What did she do? How did Jesus challenge her? How did
she respond? How could she make such a statement? (See 18)
8.
Read vs. 27-28. How did Jesus answer the woman’s request? Why?
What kind of faith did the woman have? What can we learn here
about what can make a person clean?
