BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR LICENSURE AS A PHARMACIST IN NORTH CAROLINA
In order to become licensed as a pharmacist in North Carolina the law
requires that an applicant shall present to the Board of Pharmacy
satisfactory evidence that the applicant:
1. has had practical experience in pharmacy under the supervision of a
licensed pharmacist, which experience shall be approved by the Board
of Pharmacy and shall not be required to exceed one year as may be
determined by the Board of Pharmacy,
2. has graduated from an accredited school or college of pharmacy as
determined by the Board, or has passed the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate
Equivalency exam administered by NABP, the Test of English as a
Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Test of Spoken English (TSE),
3. and must also pass the NAPLEX (North American Pharmacy Licensure
Examination) and MPJE (Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination).
AGE
A copy of the applicant's birth certificate must substantiate proof of
age or, in the case of immigrants, forms are available from the
Immigration and Naturalization Service.
EXPERIENCE IN PHARMACY
NOTE: The required practical pharmacy experience described below may
be validated only through registration with the Board of Pharmacy or
in structured academic programs approved by the Board. Persons
eligible for registration under this program must have been accepted
for admission to an accredited school or college of pharmacy or
eligible to return to such school.

The applicant shall show that he has received (acquired) 1500 hours of
practical pharmacy experience under the supervision of a licensed
pharmacist, said 1500 hours to be acquired after the satisfactory
completion of two years of college work. Foreign graduates may NOT
begin internship prior to receiving the FPGEC Certificate. Foreign
graduates must obtain their internship experience in the United
States.
A maximum of 500 hours is allowed for non-traditional experience.
At least 1000 hours of experience shall be acquired in a community or
hospital pharmacy.

Hours obtained in clinical programs must be certified on a Board
certificate of graduation form completed at a school or college of
pharmacy. All practical pharmacy experience to be acceptable must be
acquired under the general conditions as approved by the Tripartite
Committee and the Board.
Practical pharmacy training gained outside of North Carolina is
acceptable only if it is received pursuant to a training program,
which is equivalent to that in effect in North Carolina.
Practical pharmacy experience gained outside of North Carolina but
pursuant to registration under the program of the Board in this State
is acceptable only if it meets the same requirements as are in effect
in this State. Applicants who expect to gain experience under these
conditions should have certified copies of experience sent to this
Board for consideration.
EXAMINATIONS
The NAPLEX and MPJE exams will be administered daily, Monday through
Saturday, excluding holidays, through Pearson VUE. You may register

The NAPLEX is a theoretical computer-adaptive examination that
consists of 185 multiple-choice test questions. The MPJE is a
two-hour, computer-adaptive jurisprudence examination that consists of
90 multiple-choice test questions.
