Part I: General Information

Description of town
- Short history and location
Kaunas is one of Lithuania’s most beautiful and one of the oldest
cities in the crossroads of Europe and at the heart of the country.
Having over 320 thousands of population it lays at the confluence of
two main Lithuanian rivers: the Nemunas and the Neris. First
historical mentioning comes back to the beginning of 11th century.
First known brick buildings were built in the 15th century. Kaunas
especially flourished and became more prosperous and beautiful in the
17th century. It became a hanseatic city – the only one in the whole
country. In the 20th century, after the Vilnius region was ripped away
by the Poles in 1920, the city became the temporary capital of
Republic of Lithuania. It was the second golden age of the town.
During this period many impressive buildings of Lithuanian “art
nouveau” style were erected in Kaunas. Together with old city composed
of ancient gothic and baroque style churches and former commerce
houses it forms the attraction of city.
Kaunas is rich in its architectural monuments: Kaunas Castle (xiv c.),
City Hall (xvi c.), Kaunas Cathedral Basilica (xv c.), House of
Thunder God (xv c.), Vytautas Church (xv c.), and Ensemble of
Pazaislis Monastery (xvii c.). One can easily reach the centre of
Kaunas walking along the pedestrian street, which joins Laisves avenue
- the central pedestrian street of the city. Numerous shops,
restaurants, cafes, and bars are established along these streets.
There are eight universities or university level academic institutions
financed by the state, eight theatres (the State Academic Drama
Theatre and the State Musical Theatre are among them), more than 20
museums and art galleries in Kaunas.
- Main local/cultural events
The birthday of city is celebrated annually in the beginning of May.
This three days celebration is the most popular event in city’s every
day life. All year round Kaunas and its surroundings enjoy Pazaislis
Classical Music Festival which is known far away from Kaunas. Name of
the festival comes from unique complex of buildings of Pazaislis abbey
of the 17-18th centuries. Another big cultural event is well known
International Kaunas Jazz Festival which also takes place every year
at different spots of the city. Together with the other cultural
events such as the Bike Show Millennium, International Modern Dance
Festival, various arts exhibitions. They attract lots of people from
different regions and countries. Also everyone can enjoy visiting
concerts, theatres, halls, clubs, museums, etc.
- How to reach town (links from the nearest airport, train or coach
stations)
Kaunas is situated in the centre of Lithuania, just 100 kilometres
from the capital city Vilnius. Kaunas may be reached by plane, train,
bus, ferry (arrival to Klaipeda) or car depending where you are from.
One of the most convenient means of transport is plane although not
the cheapest.
BY PLANE
Lithuania has three international airports in Vilnius, Kaunas and
Palanga which can be reached from the main European cities as well as
from all over the world. Cheap flights companies Ryanair (to Kaunas)
and Airbaltic (to Vilnius) can offer you an affordable ticket from
many big cities of Europe.
Kaunas international airport is located 12 km far from Kaunas and the
Kaunas city centre is easy reached by minibus no 120 (get off at the
bus stop „Kaunas old castle“) or by bus no. 29 (get off at the bus
stop „Bus station“). The duration of trip is about 30 minutes and cost
less than 1 euro.
There are direct flights to Kaunas from London, Liverpool, Birmingham,
Dublin, Alicante, Frankfurt and Riga, etc and many possibilities to
transfer flying from other country.

Short Description of the Organising Institution
Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), one of the largest technical
universities in the Baltic states, is the second largest institution
of higher education of Lithuania. It contains 13 faculties, library,
high school (gymnasium), and numerous research centres.
Kaunas University of Technology shares the best traditions of
classical universities, offering almost all fields of technological
studies and research. The social and physical sciences are being
particularly emphasized at the university, as a modern university
graduate is expected to bear much more beyond the knowledge of his
profession. Meanwhile the studies and research in the fields of
humanities and biomedicine, as well as in the interdisciplinary fields
have recently been very successfully launched. New study programmes in
mechatronics, sport engineering, musical engineering, and biomedical
engineering appeared to be very popular among the students.
The role of the university in the development of the industry and
economy of Lithuania has an immense, or even crucial, importance. We
are well-known in the world for our research achievements in the
fields of ultrasound, organic chemistry, environmental protection,
mechatronics, system dynamics, biomedical engineering, and educology.
We carry out successfully the international projects and contracts in
cooperation with foreign companies as well as enjoy close links with
entities of the Lithuanian industry. We have left far behind other
institutions of higher education in terms of both a number and a
budget of the contracts to be carried out in cooperation with
Lithuanian companies.
The university staff consists of approximately 1.000 academic staff,
167 professors and 499 associated professors. There are about 13.000
students, in addition to 400 doctoral students.
Undergraduates have a choice of 41 majors, and graduate students may
choose among 65 graduate areas of study leading to the master's degree
and among 17 graduate areas of study leading to the PhD degree.
The university’s international relations are constantly expanding.
Since 1989 more than 70 international co-operation agreements have
been signed. A great number of projects on bilateral cooperation basis
have been carried out by different faculties, departments, and other
academic divisions of the university. The expansion of the
university’s international relations has allowed KTU to adopt the
module study system and to co-ordinate it with the European credit
transfer system (ECTS). The university, together with its faculties
and other subdivisions, is a member of more than twenty international
organizations.
The library of Kaunas University of Technology is the oldest academic
library in Kaunas, dating back to 1920. The library, primarily an
academic one, is open to the public, with special emphasis on the
subject areas studied and researched at the university. Literature on
science and technology forms the main part of the library collection.
In addition to its main collection of over 2 million volumes the
library houses a valuable rare book collection of 20 000 volumes of
foreign and Lithuanian works the earliest dating back to the 15th
century.
Access to the library’s on-line resources is by the web address
http://en.ktu.lt/content/structure/library giving general information
about the library, www links catalogue, and links to fee-based and
free databases, end-users information literacy courses. Access to the
library’s catalogue and database “publications” is by
http://ktu.library.lt/aleph . The latter gives access to the catalogue
for books, periodicals, cd-rom's, standards and to catalogues of other
libraries.
Language course will take place at the Department of Linguistics. It
is one of the departments at the Faculty of Humanities. Others include
Department of Philosophy and Cultural Science, the Department of
Musical Technologies and the Centre of Foreign Languages.
