Library Binding Work Group on Reducing Binding Costs
(November 3, 2006)
In a December 19, 2005 report to the University Librarians' Council,
AVC Ron Coley recommended and the Council subsequently endorsed
"formation of a work group to examine further means of reducing
binding costs to the libraries by evaluating savings that could be
generated through changing material specifications...implementing
greater standardization of binding services...examining process
improvements that would reduce labor costs...and evaluating savings
from reduced shipment intervals."
The charge to the Library Binding Work Group is to investigate and
make recommendations on the following means to reduce binding costs
throughout the UC system:
1.
changing materials specifications, e.g., examining cover board and
cloth alternatives;
2.
implementing greater standardization of binding products and
services, e.g., uniform spine lettering protocols for all
campuses, standardized binding preparation procedures, eliminating
endpapers with printing customized for each campus;
3.
examining process improvements that would reduce labor costs at
the libraries and/or the bindery;
4.
evaluating savings from reduced shipment intervals; and
5.
other opportunities cost savings that come to the attention of the
Work Group.
The Library Binding Work Group will be composed of six members
representing library binding preparation, technical services,
collection development, preservation, financial services, and UC
Library Binding Services. The Library Binding Work Group will
communicate and meet as needed and will be authorized to form ad hoc
task forces as needed to undertake investigations requiring skills and
knowledge not represented on the Group.
The Library Binding Work Group will begin immediately, investigate
options for reductions in cost, review options with the Preservation
Advisory Group to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the
implications of possible recommendations, and report final
recommendations to the ULs by June 07. The ULs will review the report,
authorize implementation of approved recommendations, and authorize
the Group to continue, if needed.
