Notes for Participants in First Consultative Meeting
====================================================
Purpose of the Meeting
The purpose of the First Consultative Meeting is to help building the
proposed “ISDR Global Media Network for Disaster Risk Reduction” by
establishing its foundations.
Before the Meeting
Every participant is supposed to read the draft Concept Paper
developed by the ISDR secretariat on the Global Media Network for DRR
beforehand and come to the meeting with comments, suggestions and a
reasonable “vision” of his/her role in the proposed ISDR Media Group.
The participants should reflect on:
*
What is the limit of my participation?
*
How can I contribute to the building of the Global Media Network
before its launch and to its sustainability and growth after its
launch?
*
What could be my tasks and responsibilities?
*
How can my organization be involved and how can I involve my
organization in the Media Group’s objectives?
During the Meeting
Day 1
*
In the morning session of Day 1, participants will have the
opportunity to express their views on the relevance of the
proposed ISDR Media Group and Global Media Network, and to be
critical about the initiative. This session should be very
constructive as the opinion of each participant will be taken into
account.
*
Participants like Roger Morier who is participating in the Complus
Alliance, and Reuters which is establishing a “Media Bridge”, will
be asked to share their different experiences on similar
initiatives to enlarge the debate.
*
Each participant will be given six (6) minutes to share his/her
views.
*
The afternoon session will divide participants into two (2) groups
of seven (7) participants, each group composed of disaster experts
and journalists to reflect two different perspectives: that of
disaster experts and that of journalists.
*
The discussions will put in evidence the problems, limits,
challenges and expected results from two different points of views
and should identify “the raison d’être” of the Global Media
Network and that of the Media Group? (What are the Network and
Group about? Where should they be based and how should they be
constituted? Who should participate now and in the future? How are
they functioning - role and task of member)? What it is needed for
them to function adequately?)
Day 2
*
Day 2 is devoted to concrete issues. The Media Group will discuss
and adopt concrete and practical resolutions regarding the Global
Media Network and the Media Group.
*
The Media Group will present a calendar of possible events,
activities and contributions for three specific time periods: (1)
Before the launch of the Global Media Network in June 2007; (2)
During the launch of the Global Media Network in June 2007 ; and
(3) After the launch of the Global Media Network until the end of
2007.
*
Toward the end of the two-day meeting, the ISDR secretariat will
present a paper for review and adoption by the meeting
participants: a paper with conclusions, recommendations and
resolutions, including the aim, objectives and responsibilities of
the Media Group that will establish the proposed Global Media
Network.
