How to view Exhibitions at the National Gallery of Jamaica
The exhibitions of the National Gallery of Jamaica can be viewed in
primarily two (2) ways, these are by: 1. Self Tour or
2. Guided Tour
In order to utilize any of these approaches a number of steps have to
be followed so as to gain access to the exhibitions.
Steps for the Self Tour
Step 1 – Visit the National Gallery of Jamaica on a day and during
hours that it is open to
the public.
n.b. - Days open to the public: Tuesday – Saturday
- Opening hours : Tuesday – Thursday – 10:00 – 4:30 pm
Fridays - 10:00 – 3:30 pm
Saturdays - 10:00 – 3:00 pm
Step 2 – Upon arrival at the gallery, visitors who are not students in
uniform or
in possession of school identification, will be required to pay an
entrance fee.
These fees are : . General admission $ 400.00
. Teacher with students $ 200.00
and senior citizens
n.b. Though students are not required to pay an entrance fee, they
can give a donation to the National Gallery via its donation box.
Step 3 – Following payment, collect your ticket and commence self
tour.
n.b. 1. While viewing the galleries exhibits no photography or filming
is allowed.
2. Groups with children doing a self tour will not be allowed to tour
the
exhibition areas without proper adult supervision. As a result only a
maximum of twenty five (25) children are allowed to view the exhibits
with two (2) adults. Groups with larger children numbers will be
required
to provide additional adult supervision.
3. If you desire some preparatory information before starting your
self
tour kindly request an Introduction from the Education Department. An
Introduction is a 10 – 15 minute oral presentation which provides
visitors
with background information on the gallery, suggestions for how to
view
the exhibitions and tips on how to generally comprehend art work.
Steps for the Guided Tour
Step 1 – Book guided tour one week in advance. During the booking
the following information has to be provided:

Date and time of tour
*
Name of Group/Organization/Person(s) requesting the tour
*
Total number in visiting party
*
Name of contact person
*
A contact number and or email address
*
Purpose of tour
n.b. The NGJ only takes bookings for guided tour one week in advance
Step 2 – Confirm information provided and record given confirmation
code.
n.b. without a confirmation code a guided tour is not booked.
Step 3 – Upon arrival at the National Gallery of Jamaica the booked
individual or group
should first state name and appointment then present confirmation
code,
following these actions the relevant entrance fees should be paid
and then the appropriate tour fees should also be paid.
General entrance fee - $ 400.00
General tour fee - $ 3000.00
Entrance fee for
teachers with students
and senior citizens - $ 200.00
Tour fee for school
Groups - $ 2000.00
n.b. each tour fee covers a minimum of one (1) person to a maximum of
twenty five (25) persons.
n.b. tertiary level students, especially those attending institutions
in other
countries are generally required to present an updated school ID
before
commencing their tour.
Step 4 -- Upon completion of step 3 the visitor or visitors will be
guided through
the exhibition of their choice, with the assistance of a curatorial
assistant.
n.b. 1. From the curatorial assistant the visitor/ visitors will
receive various
types of background information which can be used to contextualize the
exhibition.
2. Guided tours usually last for an hour or an hour and 30 minutes,
depending on questions and visitor interest.

While touring please note that flash photography is not allowed.
Tour Formats
The guided tours provided at the National Gallery of Jamaica are
usually made available to the public through the utilization of two
(2) tour formats, these are the:
1.
Forms of Art Tour Format and the
2.
Historical Tour Format.
Though each format has been developed to facilitate a diversity of
learning and aesthetic experiences at the National Gallery, each can
be further adjusted following consultation, in order to cater to even
more specific interest and learning outcomes.
Additionally, it should be noted that the National Gallery of Jamaica
does not presently provide tours to children under five (5) years old.
Forms of Art Tour Format
This tour type is generally recommended to persons who are easily
distracted, interested in the fundamentals of the visual arts, or are
aged 5 – 8 years old.
The duration of this tour is one (1) hour. However please note that
any request for a tour lasting 45 minutes, which uses this format, has
to be made before the receipt of a confirmation code.
Participation in this tour format includes learning about three (3)
different forms of art within the National Gallery of Jamaica’s
collection. Strategically aided by the use of instructional media and
learning activities such as short quiz sessions, demonstrations and in
some cases drawing and colouring experiences.
n.b. if tour participants request the inclusion of drawing and
colouring activities,
they will be asked to provide the crayons, pencils and plain sheets of
paper that
will be utilized during the tour type.
Historical Tour Format
This tour type is generally recommended to persons who have a fairly
long attention span, are interested in the historical development of
the visual arts in Jamaica, or are older than 8 years old.
The duration of this tour is one (1) hour and thirty (30) minutes.
Participation in this tour format includes learning about the
historical development of Jamaican art form the time of the Tainos
(approx. AD 1000 – 1600) through to the decade of the 1980’s, via the
provision of biographical and historical information, a set of
question and answer segments and a number of short viewing sessions.
